RF Exposure Information (SAR)

This device meets the government’s requirements for exposure to radio waves. This device is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC is 4.0W/kg (Head 1g SAR 1.6W/kg). Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions accepted by the FCC with the device transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the device while operating can be well below the maximum value.
This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output. The highest SAR value for the model device as reported to the FCC when tested is 1.21 W/kg as described in this user guide (head 1g SAR 1.09W/kg). While there may be differences between the SAR levels of various devices and at various positions, they all meet the government requirements.
The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this model device with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF exposure guidelines. SAR information on this model device is on file with the FCC and can be found under the Display Grant section of www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid.
For body-worn operation, this device has been tested and meets the FCC RF exposure guidelines for use with an accessory that contains no metal and be positioned a minimum of 10mm from the body. Use of other accessories may not ensure compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines.
§15.19 (a)(3)
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
§15.21
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user`s authority to operate the equipment.
WEEE
This device must not be disposed of as normal household waste, in accordance with the EU directive for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE – 2002/96/EC). Instead, it should be disposed of by returning it to the point of sale, or to a municipal recycling collection point.

CONNECTING YOUR FIOS ExTENDER

Connecting your Fios Extender and accessing its web-based User Interface (UI) are both simple procedures.

Accessing the UI may vary slightly, depending on your device’s operating system and web browser.

SETTING UP YOUR FIOS EXTENDER

Note: Using a wired backhaul, the Fios Extender can be placed at a location distant from the Fios Router, and positioned for optimum coverage. Using Wi-Fi backhaul, performance can be slower and the distance from the Router will be determined by the reach of

Wi-Fi from the Fios Router, the materials in the home, and neighboring Wi-Fi traffic. Wi-Fi backhaul is effective and convenient for Wi-Fi configuration, but based on Wi-Fi interference characteristics, does not perform as well as a wired connection.

WIRED INSTALLATION

  1. Connect the Fios Router to a coax outlet. (If the coax outlet is already in use, use the coax splitter included in the box.)
  2. Connect the Fios Extender to a coax outlet – ideally in an area with spotty Wi-Fi coverage.
  3. Connect the power cords to the Router and Extender then to an electrical outlet.
    Wired Installation
  4. After 10 minutes, the light on the Extender should turn solid white, indicating the connection is complete.
Note: If home is wired for Ethernet, follow same steps as above using an Ethernet cable instead of a coax cable.

WI-FI INSTALLATION

      1. Place the Fios Extender directly next to the Fios Router.
      2. Take the Ethernet cable from the packaging and connect one end to the yellow port on the Router and the other end to the yellow port on the Extender.
      3. Connect the power cord to your extender then to an electrical outlet.
        Wi-Fi Installation
      4. After 10 minutes, the light on the Extender should turn solid white, indicating the connection is complete.
      5. Unplug and move the Extender to an area between the Router and an area with spotty Wi-Fi coverage. Once the Extender is plugged in, the light should turn solid white again within a few minutes.

You’re all set! Your devices will automatically connect to your Wi-Fi network, there is nothing more to do.

Note: The Fios Extender has a Wi-Fi Name/Password that is different from the Fios Router. When the Extender connects to the Router via Coax, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi, the Extender is assigned the Wi-Fi Name/Password of the Router. At this time, the Extender doesn’t have the ability to use the Wi-Fi Name/Password on the rear label and only uses the same Wi-Fi Name/Password as the Router.

WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is an easier way for many devices to set up a secure Wi-Fi network connection. Instead of manually entering passwords or multiple keys on each Wi-Fi client,

such as a laptop, printer, or external hard drive, your Fios Extender creates a secure Wi-Fi network.

In most cases, this only requires the pressing of two buttons – one on your Fios Extender and one on the Wi-Fi client. This could be either a built-in button or one on a compatible Wi-Fi adapter/card, or a virtual button in software. Once completed, this allows Wi-Fi clients to join your Wi-Fi network.

To initialize the WPS process, you can either press and hold the unified button located on the front of your Fios Extender for more than two seconds or use the UI and press the on-screen button.

You can easily add Wi-Fi devices to your Wi-Fi network using the WPS option if your Wi-Fi device supports the WPS feature.

To access WPS using the user interface:

  1. From the main menu, select Wi-Fi settings, then select Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
    Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
  2. Use one of the following methods:
    • If your Wi-Fi client device has a WPS button, press the unified button on your router for more than two seconds, then click the start WPS button in the Option 1 to start the WPS registration process.
    • If your client device has a WPS PIN, locate the PIN printed on the client’s label or in the client documentation. Enter the PIN number in the Enter PIN field. The Client WPS PIN field is located in the Option 2 on the user interface.
    • Click Register.
    • Alternatively, you can enter the router’s PIN shown on this screen into the WPS user interface of your device, if this PIN mode is supported by your Wi-Fi device.
  3. After pressing the unified button (WPS) on your Fios Extender, you have two minutes to press the WPS button on the client device before the WPS session times out.
When the unified button (WPS) on your Fios Extender is pressed, the Status LED on the front of your Fios Extender begins flashing blue. The flashing continues until WPS pairing to the client device completes successfully. At this time, the Status LED turns solid blue.
If WPS fails to establish a connection to a Wi-Fi client device within two minutes, the Status LED on your Fios Extender flashes red for two minutes to indicate the WPS pairing process was unsuccessful. After flashing red, the light returns to solid white to indicate that Wi-Fi is on.

Note: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) cannot be used if WPA3 security is enabled or SSID broadcast is disabled or if MAC address authentication is enabled with an empty white list.

TROUBLESHOOTING

This chapter lists solutions for issues that may be encountered while using your Fios Extender as well as frequently asked questions.

Although the majority of the Fios Extender’s LAN and internet connectivity is automatic and transparent, if an issue does occur accessing the internet (e.g. complete loss of connectivity, inability to access services, etc.), you may need to take additional steps to resolve the problem.

Note: The advanced settings should only be configured by experienced network technicians to avoid adversely affecting the operation of your Fios Extender and your local network.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET:

  • The first thing to check is whether your Fios Extender is powered on and is connected to the Fios Router. Check the  Status LED on the front of the Fios Extender. Be sure to refer to the “1.3a/ FRONT PANEL” on page 7 to determine status of the Fios Extender. Check the WAN cable (Ethernet or coaxial) connecting your Fios Router to the internet to make sure it is properly connected on both ends.
  • If the prior tips do not resolve your connection issue, try restarting (rebooting) the Fios Extender by manually pressing the ‘red’ reset button on the rear panel of the Fios Extender for 2-4 seconds (the Status LED  should go off) to begin rebooting your Fios Extender. Your Fios Extender will begin rebooting and will return to service in 3 – 5 minutes depending on your network connection. Check  Status LED  and if it is solid white, try again to access the internet.
  • If rebooting your Fios Extender does not resolve your connection issue, try power cycling the Extender by unplugging the power cable from the adapter or the wall and wait 2 minutes. During the 2 min. wait period, also power cycle the network device (e.g. the computer, tablet, etc.) and then plug the power cable back into the Fios Extender. After 3-5 minutes, recheck the Status LED  and try again to access the internet.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO CONNECT TO YOUR FIOS ExTENDER USING WI-FI:

  • Be sure your Wi-Fi device is within range of your Fios Extender; move it closer to see if your connection improves.
  • Check your network device’s Wi-Fi settings to be sure your device’s Wi-Fi is on (enabled) and that you have the correct Wi-Fi network and password (if using a Wi-Fi password) as configured on your Fios Extender.
  • Be sure you are connecting to the correct Wi-Fi network; check to be sure you are using your Fios Extender’s SSID. In some cases, if using a Wi-Fi password, you may need to enter the Wi-Fi password into your network device again to be sure your device accepts the password.
  • Check to be sure you are running the latest software for your network device.
  • Try turning your network device’s Wi-Fi off and on, and try to connect.
  • If you have made any changes in your network settings and turning your network device’s Wi-Fi off and on does not help, try to restart your network device.
  • You may need to turn the Wi-Fi settings from on to off, and back to on again and apply the changes.
  • If you are still unable to access your Fios Extender, you may need to try connecting to the Extender using another network device. If the issue goes away with another network device, the issue is likely with that individual network device’s configuration.

ACCESSING YOUR FIOS ExTENDER IF YOU ARE LOCKED OUT

  • If your Fios Extender connection is lost while making configuration changes, a setting that locks access to your Fios Extender’s UI may have inadvertently been activated.

The common ways to lock access to your Fios Extender are:

  • Scheduler – If a schedule has been created that applies to the computer over the connection being used, your Fios Extender will not be accessible during the times set in the schedule.
  • Access Control – If the access control setting for the computer is set to block the computer, access to your Fios Extender is denied.

To gain access, restore the default settings to your Extender.

RESTORING YOUR FIOS ExTENDER’S DEFAULT SETTINGS

There are two ways to restore your Fios Extender’s default settings. It is important to note that after performing either procedure, all previously saved settings on your Fios Extender will be lost.

  • Using the tip of a ballpoint pen or pencil, press and hold the Reset button on the back of your Fios Extender for at least ten seconds.
  • Access the UI and navigate to the Advanced Settings page. Select Factory Default option. Click the Restore Default Settings button. For additional details, refer to section 4.3/ Factory Default section of this guide.

Note: If you reset or reboot your Fios Extender, you may also need to disconnect your Fios Extender’s power supply for a few minutes (3 or more) and then reconnect the power cable. However, in order to provide full synchronization to the coaxial network, disconnecting and reconnecting the power may be required.

LAN CONNECTION FAILURE

To troubleshoot a LAN connection failure:

  • Verify your Fios Extender is properly installed, LAN connections are correct, and that the Fios Extender and communicating network devices are all powered on.
  • Confirm that the computer and Fios Extender are both on the same network segment.

If unsure, let the computer get the IP address automatically by initiating the DHCP function, then verify the computer is using an IP address within the default range of 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254. If the computer is not using an IP address within the correct IP range, it will not connect to your Fios Extender.

  • Verify the subnet mask address is set to 255.255.255.0.

TIMEOUT ERROR OCCURS WHEN ENTERING THE URL OR IP ADDRESS

Verify the following:

  • All computers are working properly.
  • IP settings are correct.
  • Fios Extender is on and connected properly.

For connections experiencing lag or a slow response:

  • Check for other devices on the network utilizing large portions of the bandwidth and if possible temporarily stop their current utilization and recheck the connection.
  • If lag still exists, clear the cache on the computer and if still needed, unplug the Ethernet cable or disable the Wi-Fi connection to the computer experiencing the slow connection and then reconnect or enable the Wi-Fi connection and try the connection again.

In rare cases you may also need to:

  • Unplug the Ethernet cable to Fios Extender and restart the Fios Extender, wait 1-2 mins. and insert the Ethernet cable again.
  • Under limited circumstances you may use a port forwarding configuration on the Fios Router, based on the application you are using (refer to Verizon’s support online help for more details).

FRONT UNIFIED BUTTON

The front panel’s Unified Button allows quick access to the

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) feature and handset paging/pairing mode. In addition, the Unified Button provides a visual display of the Fios Extender’s current condition. Refer to the chart below for details.

Verizon FiOS Internet Service Guide

Important information about your fiber-optic equipment.

Welcome to Verizon FiOS Internet

Congratulations! Your home is now equipped with Verizon FiOS Internet, the cutting-edge technology that lets you experience communications at lightning speed.

In addition to supporting the demanding applications on the Web today, FiOS prepares you for the high-tech applications that will emerge in the future.

Your home is now ahead of its time.

As you may know, there are some important differences between fiber-optic Verizon FiOS and your traditional data and voice services. The following pages explain the equipment installed with your Verizon FiOS Internet. This information will help ensure that you get the optimal performance out of your Verizon FiOS service. Please read through it carefully.

FiOS Internet Service Installation Diagrams

Single-Family House and Some Apartments/Condominiums

Depending on the type of home you live in, your FiOS Internet service will be installed using either the installation model shown below, or the one on page 3. You will find more information on each piece of equipment on the following pages.

Single-Family House and Some Apartments Condominiums

*Indicates that the ONT could be installed onto either the outside or inside of the home.

Some Apartments/Condominiums

If you live in a building with multiple units, such as an apartment building or other location with multiple tenants, the ONT and Battery Backup Unit (BBU) may be installed in your apartment’s utility room or closet (see Single-Family House diagram). However, in many apartments and condominiums, the ONT/BBU are installed in a centralized location in your building. In that case, the information on pages 4–9 may not apply to you.

Some Apartments Condominiums

FiOS Equipment

The Optical Network Terminal (ONT): Your light source

Traditional telephone service uses copper wire to transmit communications signals. Verizon FiOS, however, transmits signals using hair-thin strands of glass fiber and laser-generated pulses of light.

When that light reaches your home through the Verizon network, it is converted into electric signals in a box installed onto either the outside or inside of your home called the ONT. That way, it can be “read” by your telephones and computers. Information that is sent from your home will be converted from electric signals to light in the ONT.

Unlike traditional self-powered telephone service, your Verizon FiOS service depends on your home’s power source.

The ONT has a power cord that goes into your home through the ONT Power Supply Unit, where it plugs into an existing standard electrical outlet.

To ensure connectivity to the Verizon FiOS network, please make sure your ONT Power Supply Unit is plugged in at all times.

Verizon FiOS network

Please note: One of these ONT models will be installed onto either the outside or inside of your home.

ONT Power Supply Unit (OPSU): Your electricity source

Your ONT requires electricity to operate all Verizon services provided on the FiOS network. The OPSU supplies that power by connecting your ONT directly to an electrical outlet in your home or garage.

verizon ont i-211m-l manual OPSU contains a single indicator light

The OPSU contains a single indicator light that tells you if electrical power is present. If the indicator light is dark, electricity is not flowing from the outlet to the ONT. In normal operation, the light should be green.

The ONT requires very little power to operate. In fact, the amount of power needed is as little as what it would take to operate a couple of night lights.

verizon ont i-211m-l manual

Battery Backup Unit (BBU): Continuous power when you need it

In case your ONT Power Supply Unit is accidentally unplugged — or in the event of a commercial power failure — a BBU has been installed to provide you with backup power for voice service for approximately eight hours.

Your BBU was installed in a location in your home or garage where it can be easily monitored — most likely near the OPSU. The BBU is connected directly to the ONT to provide backup power if it’s needed. In addition, the BBU contains a series of indicator lights that tells you whether your service is being powered by your home’s electricity or the battery.

The BBU also tells you when the battery needs to be replaced. The average life of your battery is between one and four years, depending on the average temperature of the environment. When your battery does need to be replaced, you can purchase a sealed lead-acid battery at a major electronics outlet or a home-improvement store. Or, you can contact the Verizon Fiber Solutions Center at 1-888-553-1555 and they will direct you to an approved battery replacement vendor who will be able to handle your request for a new battery.

Note: Battery disposal standards and requirements vary by state. If you need to replace the sealed lead-acid battery in your backup unit, please check the following Environmental Protection Agency resources for proper disposal instructions: visit www.epa.gov/epr/products/batteries.html or call the EPA directly at 1-800-424-9346.

BBU Audible Alarms:

Both BBU models are equipped with an audible alarm to inform you of problems with your BBU. The alarm sounds for two seconds and then is silent for 58 seconds. The conditions listed below are the potential reasons for the audible alarm. You can use the alarm in combination with the indicator lights to troubleshoot your BBU issue.

Low Battery — Alarm is silenced if the battery voltage goes above 12V (electrical power has returned), the battery is fully discharged or the battery is removed from the BBU.

Foreign Voltage — Alarm is silenced once the foreign voltage has been properly removed.

Replace Battery — Alarm is silenced when the battery is removed.

Overcurrent — Alarm is silenced once the overcurrent has been properly removed.

Since you are responsible for the management of your battery, it is very important that you familiarize yourself with the light signals and audible alarms to ensure that you have backup power if it’s needed.

BBU Indicator Signals:

You have received one of the following BBU models as part of your FiOS installation. Please look at the photos to determine which model you have.

Models #1 & #2:

The BBU models below use a combination of lights and buttons to signify certain conditions, as described below.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you experience problems with your phone or Internet service, the following checklist could save you a call to the Verizon Fiber Solutions Center. It will also help us get to the root of the problem faster when you do call.

Power:

  1. Check to see if you are experiencing a power outage.
  2. If there is no power outage, check to see if your OPSU is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the indicator light is illuminated.
  3. If the indicator light is not illuminated and the outlet is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), check to make sure it hasn’t been tripped. If it has, press the reset button.
  4. Check the fuses and circuit breaker to make sure your outlet is working. Reset the breaker or replace fuses, if necessary.
  5. After taking these steps, recheck the indicator light on the OPSU to see if it is illuminated. If it is, recheck for service.

Battery:

If you are experiencing a power outage, please review the following battery troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the lights on your BBU (see pages 8 and 9) and check the battery connection inside the BBU.
  2. If the battery is properly connected and the Replace Battery indicator light is red, replace the battery in your BBU, as it is fully discharged.
  3. After taking these steps, recheck the BBU indicator lights. If the battery lights are not in normal status, call the Verizon Fiber Solutions Center for assistance.

If you have gone through the above Power and Battery checklists and are still experiencing problems with your Internet service (or with both Voice and Internet services), skip the following Voice Service Test and call the Verizon Fiber Solutions Center directly.

Voice Service Test:

If you’re having problems with your voice service, it could be your inside wiring. To find out, take a corded wireline telephone and a slotted-tip screwdriver to your ONT. Open the cover and remove the wire from the phone jack in question. Plug in your telephone and listen for the dial tone.

If you hear a dial tone, then the problem may be with your inside wiring. Please contact the Verizon Fiber Solutions Center for assistance. (Charges may apply for the repair of inside wiring.) If you don’t hear a dial tone, please call the

Verizon Fiber Solutions Center to report your trouble. A technician may ask you to describe the indicator lights inside your ONT, in order to help diagnose the problem. In addition, your technician will assist you with understanding what each light means.

If you do not have voice service with Verizon, you will not be able to perform the dial-tone test. In that case, contact us and we’ll be happy to help you. Call 1-888-553-1555 — 24 hours a day

Power for services provided on the Verizon FiOS network must be supplied by the customer. Customer is responsible for backup battery replacement. Backup battery does not supply power for Internet, VOIP or video services. In case of power failure, 911 service (except through VOIP) will be available until the backup battery expires. Certain telephones, answering machines and other telephone equipment not meeting industry standards may not work with service provided on the Verizon FiOS network.
