Does this have a microwave function?

This Oven comes with 5 automatic programming modes for a quick operation, including Grill, Broil Roast, Bake, Light modes.

Is this the same size as a regular oven ?

Thermomate supply 24″ Single Wall Ovens, and this oven cutout size: 23.0″W x 22.0″H x 22.5″D. Dimension: 23.4″W x 23.4″H x 21.9″D. You can also look through the Product Description in detail.

How is the SMEG cookware range made?

The Smeg Cookware range is made of cold forged aluminium with a non-stick coating and steel handles. A stainless steel bottom is applied to the aluminium body, which makes them compatible with induction hobs. Lastly, the matching lids are made of tempered heat-resistant glass. All materials comply with the requirements of current food contact materials regulations.

What is the non-stick coating of the SMEG cookware range made of?

The non-stick coating of the Smeg Cookware range, like the more traditional coatings available on the market, also contains PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is more commonly known as Teflon™. PTFE is a cold, heat and chemical resistant synthetic polymer. This coating material guarantees excellent long-lasting non-stick performance.

What is the non-stick coating of the SMEG cookware range made of?

The non-stick coatings are applied to the cookware in layers. The first layer adheres to the metal surface of the pan. The second non-stick PTFE layer provides resistance to scratches and abrasion, while the last layer gives the pots and pans the non-stick surface that makes it easier to clean them and to cook food by limiting the need for oils and fats.

What kind of utensils should I use with the SMEG non-stick range?

It is recommended to use wooden, plastic or silicone kitchen utensils. Store the cookware carefully in order to protect the non-stick coating. Do not use sharp metal utensils and do not cut food inside the cookware to avoid scratching the non-stick layer and voiding the warranty.

Can I use SMEG cookware on glass-ceramic hobs?

Yes, the Smeg Cookware range is compatible with glass-ceramic, induction and electrical resistance or halogen hobs. Before starting to cook, make sure that the base of the cookware is clean as residues of dirt could scratch the surface of the hobs. When moving the cookware from one heating element to another, do not slide it across the hob; lift it to avoid scratching the surface. When using cookware on induction hobs, we recommend that you do not preheat an empty pan, as this may damage the non-stick coating.

Why does the cookware make a cracking noise when in use?

It is normal to hear noises coming from the cookware during heating or cooling. These cracking noises are due to settling between the two different types of metal that make up the bottom of the cookware. This does not indicate a malfunction or a fault and does not affect performance.

Can the pan or lid be used in the oven?

Yes, both components can be used in the oven up to 250 °C/480 °F. However, you should make sure that the lid is intact and free from cracks. Avoid subjecting the glass lid to sudden temperature variations.

Can I cook without oil or fat?

Yes, unless you wish to add oils and fats to flavour the preparation, the Smeg Cookware range allows you to cook without oils or fats. Do not use cooking oil sprays as they may leave residues that can alter the non-stick properties of the cookware.

Is the non-stick coating high temperature resistant?

Yes, it can be used at high temperatures and in the oven up to 250 °C/480 °F, well above typical cooking, roasting and frying temperatures, without the risk of deterioration or damage to the coating. Consider that: Water boils at 100 °C; the normal temperatures used to brown meat range from 200 to 240 °C; the highest temperatures used to cook dishes in an oven are around 230 °C. It is important to know that the maximum recommended cooking temperature for preserving the nutritional properties of food in the absence of liquids, such as grilling, is 250 °C. However, you should remember that cookware should never be left unattended or heated empty on the heat source as they could reach much higher temperatures very quickly. We recommend heating non-stick pans at medium or low temperatures.

What causes the yellowing of the steel parts (handles and bottom)?

The steel parts may yellow slightly over time or if the product is subjected to high temperatures, for example in an oven. It is recommended to use readily available special creams for cleaning the steel parts. For safety and for best results, we recommend using the Smeg CREMA INOX polishing cream. Contact an authorised service centre to find out if it is available in your country.

  •  Lift the lid (2) and insert coffee beans into the container (3).
  •  Check that the drip tray (14) is correctly positioned.
  • Press the button (9) , the machine starts the heating phase and the keys light up flashing in sequence. At the end of the heating, a self-cleaning cycle of the internal circuits is carried out and, once the cycle is finished, the machine is ready to be used.

At the first use it is recommended to make at least one coffee to make a complete break-in of all the circuits. After 20 minutes of non-use, the machine switches off. If it has made at least one coffee, it performs a self-cleaning cycle. Press the button (9) to switch on the machine. Change of dispensing program:  The machine has two dispensing menus in its memory: Primary and Secondary. To switch from one program to another, press the key (20) . In the Primary menu all the keys are illuminated in white, in the Secondary menu, all the keys are illuminated in orange. For the specific functions of each menu, refer to the paragraph “DESCRIPTION OF CONTROLS AND ALARMS” Turning off the machine the setting of the Primary or Secondary dispensing menu remains in the memory at the next restart. • Refit the service door (8) making sure it is correctly positioned.
  • Do not wash the brewing group in the dishwasher in order not to damage it permanently.

Steam wand cleaning (30)

  •  Wait for the steam wand (30) to cool before operating.
  •  Remove the lower part (34) of the steam wand by turning it anticlockwise to release it then pull it downwards.
  • Clean with running water and reassemble everything in the reverse order.

Descaling The coffee machine signals when it is necessary to carry out a descaling cycle based on the set water hardness (For the setting of the water hardness, see the “Machine Settings” paragraph). If the LED (25)  lights up steadily, it means that a descaling cycle is necessary, so as not to alter the taste of the coffee and damage the machine. However, coffee and further drinks may continue to be dispensed for a limited number of cycles. If the LED (25) flashes, it means that a descaling cycle is mandatory to proceed with further dispensing of drinks. To carry out a descaling cycle, proceed as follows:

  • Place a container with a capacity of at least 1.4l under the dispenser (11) and the steam spout (30).
  • Make sure that the Primary program with white illuminated keys is selected.
  • Fill the tank (5), up to the “MAX” level, with a solution of water and descaler in the doses recommended by the manufacturer. With the machine ready for use, press the keys (20) and (18) simultaneously for at least 3 seconds. The key (18) flashes with an orange light and the LED (25) has a fixed light for the entire duration of the descaling cycle, which has duration of several minutes.
  • The descaling cycle ends when the solution contained in the tank (5) is finished, the key (18) and the LEDs (21) and (25) light up fixed.
  • During the descaling cycle, the machine will take a few breaks to allow the descaler to act effectively. Wait for the end of the cycle.
  •  Pour clean water into the tank (5) up to the “MAX” level to carry out the rinse cycle, then press the button (18) to start the rinse cycle, the button (18) flashes and the LED (25) lights up steadily for the entire duration of thwashing cycle.
  • When the tank (5) is empty, the rinse cycle is finished.
  • The keys light up in white.

If, at the end of the descaling process, the LED (25) remains permanently lit, it indicates that a new descaling cycle must be carried out since the quantity of descaling solution that was used was insufficient for complete cleaning. Any other servicing should be performed by an authorized service representative. “Empty system” procedure The ‘Empty system’ procedure is recommended before long periods of non-use and before consulting a maintenance manager.

  • Activate the procedure by holding down the key (16) and the key (19) simultaneously for three seconds, the key (17) and the key (19) flash simultaneously.
  • The entire quantity of water in the tank is drained through the coffee circuit and the steam spout.
  • The pump continues to operate, even intermittently, to also empty the internal water circuits.
  • At the end of the procedure the machine switches off

The empty system procedure takes several minutes and on-off cycles. Do not turn off the machine until the complete procedure is complete.

FAQS

Does this oven have a microwave function?

No, this oven does not have a microwave function. It comes with 5 automatic programming modes for quick operation, including Grill, Broil Roast, Bake, Light modes.

ShelvesFor optimising fridge space and placing foodstuffs inside the refrigerator compartment.
Fruit and vegetable drawerFor storing fruit and vegetables, maintaining a constant humidity level.
Refrigerator drawerCan be used for maintaining freshness and flavour of delicate food such as meat, fish and lightly frozen foods for a longer time period, since temperature is kept constantly between 3°C and +3°C.

NOTE Do not place food to be frozen or trays to make ice in the refrigerator compartment.

Freezer drawersFor storing frozen or deep-frozen food.
Door balconies and shelvesFor storing foodstuffs in small containers. The shelf in the lower part of the door is useful for storing bottles.

USE

NOTE Storing vegetables with high content of water can generate condensation on the glass shelf. This is a natural phenomenon which does not affect the appliance’s operation in any way.

Freezer drawers

For storing frozen foods and foods to be frozen. To remove them, pull them towards you and lift the front part of each drawer.

Ice packs

The use of ice packs guarantees reduced freezing times and improved freezer autonomy in case of power failure. The ice packs are removable and can be used safely in the picnic fridge or in the cooler bag.

Ventilation

NOTE Before introducing food into the appliance, seal it thoroughly.
The forced recirculation air in the appliance is free of humidity and quickly dries the food inside.
The inner ventilation system cools food more rapidly and keeps refrigeration homogeneous inside the appliance.

Using the refrigerator compartment

Arranging food
Arrange food on the various shelves, making sure that they are wrapped and covered hermetically. This precaution ensures that:

  • the flavour, moisture and freshness of the foods is preserved;
  • any contamination of foods with odours or tastes from other foods can be avoided;
  • the humidity level inside the refrigerator is prevented from becoming too high as a result of the normal transpiration of food (especially fresh fruit and vegetables). In some operating conditions (rise in ambient temperature and humidity, more frequent opening of the door) this might cause condensation to form on the shelves.
NOTE Always allow hot foods and drinks to cool to room temperature before putting them in the appliance.

Defrosted foods

Food must be consumed as soon as possible once defrosted. Freezing foods preserves them, but it does not destroy any micro-organisms, which are activated after thawing, damaging the foods.
Partial defrosting lowers the nutritional value of the foodstuffs, particularly of fruit, vegetables and ready meals.

Noises during operation

The refrigerator and freezer compartments are cooled by means of a compression system. In order to maintain the preset temperature inside the refrigerator and freezer compartments, the compressor comes into operation in response to the level of cooling required, and may operate continuously if necessary. When the compressor starts up a humming sound will be heard, tending to drop in volume after a few minutes.
Another normal operating noise of the appliance is a gurgling due to the coolant flowing through the pipes in the circuit. This noise is normal and does not indicate an appliance malfunction. If it becomes too loud, this may mean that there are other causes. Checks must then be made to ensure that:

  • The refrigerator is properly levelled on the floor and does not vibrate when the compressor is in operation: if this is not the case, adjust the appliance’s feet until it is level;
  • The drawers, shelves and trays on the door are correctly positioned in their holders: if they are not, put them in correctly;
  • Bottles and containers on the various shelves are stable and not touching each other: otherwise, the vibration resulting from compressor operation could generate noise;
  • Do not place the fridge in such a way that it is in contact with furniture or other household appliances.
Heated front surface

There is a front surface heating system inside the cabinet to limit the formation of condensation around the door seal.

Turning the appliance off

Whenever the appliance is to remain unused for long periods, it should be switched off.

  1. Keep the ON/OFF button on the control panel pressed for 3 seconds. The symbols are displayed on the refrigerator and freezer temperature displays.
  2. Unplug the appliance from the wall socket.
  3. Empty the compartments.
  4. Once the freezer has fully defrosted, dry any residual accumulated moisture with a tea towel.
NOTE Leave the door ajar to ensure that moisture and stagnant air do not cause unpleasant odours.
  Storage advice General advice
  • Always check the expiry date on the food packaging.
  • The foodstuffs must be stored in closed or pre-packaged containers and must not be able to emit or absorb moisture and odours.
  • Remove perishable products from the appliance if you are going away for a long period.
Refrigerator compartment door
  • Keep eggs, butter, cheese etc. in the upper and central parts.
  • Keep drinks, bottles, cans etc. in the lower part.
Refrigerator compartment
  • Keep conserves, wine, biscuits etc. in the upper part.
  • Keep dairy products, ready meals, pastries, fruit juices, beer etc. in the central part.
  • Keep meats, cold cuts etc. in the lower part.
  • Keep fresh and tropical fruit, vegetables, carrots, potatoes, onions, etc. in the fruit and vegetable drawer.
Freezer compartment
  • The type of food, quantity and date of freezing should be marked on the container/packaging.
  • Use small containers, if possible already cold.
  • The quantity of fresh foods which can be frozen at the same time is listed on the nameplate inside the refrigerator compartment.
  • Use suitable freezer bags, tinfoil, cling-film for use with food, and freezer containers.

  • Avoid frozen food coming into contact with fresh food to be frozen.
  • Keep bagged frozen vegetables, ice, ice cream etc.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Cleaning the appliance

A special antibacterial protection on the appliance’s interior walls prevents bacterial growth and keeps them clean. They must nevertheless be cleaned regularly in order to keep them in good condition.

Cleaning the outside of the appliance
  • The appliance may be cleaned with water or alcohol-based liquid detergents (e.g. window cleaning products).
  • Avoid aggressive detergents and rough sponges in order not to damage the surfaces.
  • Use a soft brush to remove dust and fume deposits from the condenser on the rear of the appliance.
  • Clean the tank above the compressor.
Cleaning the inside of the appliance
  • Clean the inside of the appliance with diluted liquid detergent and warm water, adding a little bit of vinegar.
  • The door balconies and shelves can be removed: tap them upwards with your fist, first on one side and then on the other in the insertion zone.
  • Remove any ice thicker than 3-5 mm. Do not use sharp objects or spray products.
Defrosting

NOTE Occasional presence of frost inside the freezer compartment is normal.
Do not use electrical appliances (e.g. hair dryers) or sprays for defrosting, the plastic parts could be damaged.

Defrosting the refrigerator compartment
The refrigerator/freezer compartment does not require defrosting, as any ice which forms on the refrigeration plate will melt when the compressor is switched off. The defrosting process is automatic.
Defrost water is channelled directly into the dedicated pan on the back of the appliance, which lets it evaporate by means of the heat generated by the compressor.

Interior lighting

Interior lighting, if damaged, must be repaired by Technical Service only.

What to do if…

The appliance does not work:

  • Make sure that the appliance is plugged in and that the main switch is turned on
The compressor starts to function too often or functions continuously:
