Getting Started

Installing Ooma is easy! In fact, most users are up and calling in less than 15 minutes. This guide will walk you through setting up your Ooma Telo and introduce the basics of using your Ooma service.

Step 1 Activate Online

Begin by activating your Ooma Telo device online. Locate the seven-digit activation code printed on the bottom of the Telo.

Next, navigate a web browser to: http://www.ooma.com/activate
The activation wizard will guide you through the process. You’ll receive an email confirmation once your device is activated.

Next, decide how you want to connect your Telo to your router. There are two options:

Connect via Ethernet
This is the easiest way to get started, but means that your Ooma Telo must be installed next to your router. You can always go wireless later.

OR

Connect via Wi-Fi®
The Ooma Wireless Adapter gives you the freedom to install the Telo anywhere in your home that has access to your wireless network.

Step 2: option A Connect via Ethernet

Step 2: option B Connect via Wi-Fi

Install the Ooma Wireless Adapter
Plug the adapter  into the USB port on the back of the Telo. Rotate it upward for optimal reception.
Note: Your home router must support Wi-Fi to use the Ooma Wireless Adapter.

Step 3 Connect Your Phone

Plug your phone into the Ooma Telo
Using your existing phone cable, plug your corded phone or cordless phone base station into the PHONE port of the Telo.

Step 4 Power On

Plug in your Ooma Telo
Plug the provided AC adapter b into the POWER port. It is normal for the lights on the Telo to blink for a couple of minutes while it boots up.

Step 5 Configure Wireless Network (Wi-Fi only)

Connect a computer to your Ooma Telo
You’ll need a computer to complete your wireless setup. Use the included Ethernet cable and connect a computer to the HOME port of the Telo.

Configure wireless settings
Browse to setup.ooma.com. Click on the Wireless tab on the left. Follow the directions on the screen to link the Telo to your home Wi-Fi network. You’ll need your wireless network name and password to connect.

Congratulations, You’re Done!

The Telo is ready to be used once the logo lights up blue. Pick up the phone and listen for the Ooma dialtone to confirm that your set up is complete.

If you connected a computer to the Telo in Step 5 you may unplug it now.

Place your first phone call
Pick up the phone you connected to the Ooma Telo and dial just like you always do. Call a friend or family member and experience firsthand the quality of Ooma PureVoice™ technology. While you are at it, you might want to tell them about Ooma!

Alternative Setup Options

The Ooma Telo is flexible enough to work in almost any home network and with a variety of devices. Review the following options to see if any of them apply to your situation.

Option A Install Telo between modem and router

Installing the Telo between your modem and router will result in the best voice quality. This setup allows Ooma to prioritize your phone calls over other network traffic. Don’t worry, this won’t slow down your Internet connection.

  1. Locate the Ethernet cable that connects your modem to your router. Unplug the modem end of the cable and plug it into the HOME port of the Telo.
  2. Use the included Ethernet cable and connect the INTERNET port of the Telo to your modem.
  3. Reboot your modem and router.
Option B Install Telo between modem and PC

If you only have one computer and it is connected directly to your modem, follow these instructions:

  1. Locate the Ethernet cable that connects your modem to your computer. Unplug the modem end of the cable and plug it into the HOME port of the Telo.
  2. Use the included Ethernet cable and connect the INTERNET port of the Telo to your modem.
  3. Reboot your modem and computer.

SymbolConnecting fax machines and other devices
A standard phone splitter can be used to connect more than one device to the port.

Devices such as fax machines, digital video recorders (DVR) or set-top boxes (STB) use a phone line to make data calls. To complete these types of calls, you must dial prior to the destination phone number. A successful data transfer mainly depends on the speed and quality of your Internet connection.

To learn more, visit: www.ooma.com/fax

SymbolConnecting your phone jacks
You can link the Ooma Telo to all the phone jacks in your home, allowing you to connectphones in multiple rooms.

Note: The PHONE port on the back of your Ooma Telo is not designed or certified for connecting to your phone company’s wiring, whether through the phone jacks in your home or otherwise. In order to avoid an increased risk of fire and/or electrical shock, you must first completely and physically disconnect the telephone company’s wiring outside of your house from the phone wiring that is inside of your house, before you plug your Ooma Telo into your phone jacks. Please visit www.ooma.com/homedistribution before you proceed with connecting your Telo to your phone jacks in this manner.

Troubleshooting
  • logo is blinking reD

A blinking red logo indicates that your Ooma Telo is not
operational. It is normal for the logo to blink red for a
couple of minutes during boot up. Otherwise, check the
following to make sure everything is set up correctly:

  • Verify that you have activated your device as described in Step 1. If you plugged in your device before going through the activation process, try rebooting it now.
  • For Ethernet installations: Check that your network cables are plugged in securely. Verify that the INTERNET port is connected to your router (or modem). The LED at the bottom right of the connector will be lit green if the cable is connected properly.
  • For Wi-Fi installations: Try moving the Telo closer to your Wi-Fi router and repeating the directions in Step 5 to refresh your wireless setup. If you are unable to connect over Wi-Fi, follow the directions in Step 2: option A to connect your Telo to your router using Ethernet instead.
  • Check that your Internet connection is working. Try connecting a computer to the HOME port and browse to my.ooma.com. You should see the login screen for My Ooma. If not, troubleshoot your Internet connection.
  • Try rebooting your Telo, modem, and router by pulling out the power and plugging them back in.
  • logo does not light up
Check that the AC adapter is plugged in and power is being supplied to the device.
  • You don’t hear the Ooma dialtone
If the Ooma logo is blue but you don’t hear a dialtone, check that your phone is correctly plugged into the PHONE port.
  • Incoming calls do not ring your home phone
When Do Not Disturb is turned on, the Ooma logo will light up purple and all incoming calls will go directly to voicemail without ringing your phones. To turn off the feature, press and hold the button or dial * 7 9 from your phone.
  • You are unable to hear your messages
Check that the speaker hasn’t been turned off. Increase the volume level by pressing . The device will say what volume it has been set to.
  • Voice constantly breaks up
Voice quality is dependent on the speed and quality of your Internet connection.
For best results, Ooma recommends that you hardwire your Telo between the modem and router as shown in
Alternative Setup Option A. This configuration allows phone calls to be intelligently prioritized over other network traffic. You can optimize how Ooma allocates bandwidth by connecting a computer to the HOME port, browsing to setup.ooma.com, then clicking on the Advanced tab.

Quick Start Guide
STEP 1: Get the Ooma Setup app

The easiest way to set up your Base Station is with your iPhone or Android smartphone. Visit the app store on your phone and search for the Ooma Setup app. Open the app when it is installed.
The app will ask you to enter some information about yourself and your location. You will also pick a service plan (don’t worry – you can change this later) and enter your billing information.
To download the app faster, scan the QR code below with your smartphone camera.

If you don’t have a smartphone or cannot install the app, please contact one of our support specialists for assistance. Our support team is available at 1-888-711-6662 Monday through Friday from 5am to 5pm PST, or Saturday through Sunday from 8am to 5pm PST.

STEP 2: Connect 4G Adapter to Base Station

Make sure your Base Station is unplugged. Use the provided USB cable to connect the Connect 4G to the USB port on the back of the Base Station. If the provided cable is not long enough, you can use any USB cable up to 15’ long.

4G Placement Advisory

For the best 4G signal, the Connect 4G Adapter should be placed in an area of your house with good cellular reception such as in a room with a window. It should ideally be located as close as possible to a window. Suction cups may be used to mount the adapter directly against a window.
The adapter should not be placed in a corner, against a wall, or within 5 feet of a large metal object like a water heater or refrigerator.
You can use the signal indicator in the Base Station Setup app to find a good spot with a strong 4G signal. Simply move the Connect 4G Adapter and wait for approximately 10 seconds. The app will show the signal strength of in the adapter’s current location.

STEP 3: OPTIONAL: Plug in Ethernet Cable

If you wish to use the Ooma Connect 4G adapter as a backup Internet connection, use the included Ethernet cable to connect your Base Station to your Home Internet. Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the INTERNET port on the back of the Base Station. Connect the other end of the cable to an open port on your router.

STEP 4: Power on the Base Station

Plug the included AC adpter into the POWER port. The Ooma logo will blink red for a few minutes.
When it turns blue, the Base Station is ready.

If your Base Station needs a software upgrade, the Ooma logo will blink purple while it is downloading the newest version. This may take 5-10 minutes. Do not unplug the Base Station while it is upgrading. It will automatically reboot after the upgrade is done.
When your Ooma Base Station returns to solid blue, this indicates that your Ooma service is working.
If your Ooma Base Station maintains a solid purple, this indicates that your Ooma service is working and Do Not Disturb is enabled. All incoming calls will be directed to voicemail.

STEP 5: Connect a Phone

Make sure your Base Station is plugged in and that it has powered on and downloaded any applicable updates. Then, using an existing corded or cordless phone, plug the other end of the cord into the PHONE port.

You’re All Set!

Troubleshooting

A blinking red logo indicates that your Ooma Base Station is not operational. It is normal for the logo to blink red for a couple of minutes during boot up. Otherwise, check the following to make sure everything is set up correctly:

  • Verify that you have activated your device as described on Page 3. If you plugged in your device before going through the activation process, try rebooting it now.
  • For Ethernet installations: Check that your network cables are plugged in securely. Verify that the INTERNET port is connected to your router (or modem). Check that your Internet connection is working. Try connecting a computer to the HOME port and browse to my.ooma.com. You should see the login screen for My Ooma. If not, troubleshoot your Internet connection.

The Ooma Telo is flexible enough to work in almost any home network and with a variety of devices.
Review the following options to see if any of them apply to your situation.

Install Telo between modem and router

Installing the Telo between your modem and router will result in the best voice quality. This setup allows Ooma to
prioritize your phone calls over other network traffic. Don’t worry, this won’t slow down your Internet connection.

  1. Locate the Ethernet cable that connects your
modem to your router. Unplug the modem
end of the cable and plug it into the HOME
    port of the Telo.
  2. Use the included Ethernet cable and connect the

    port of the Telo.

Connecting fax machines and
other devices

A standard phone splitter can be used to connect
more than one device to the PHONE port.
Devices such as fax machines, digital video recorders (DVR)
or set-top boxes (STB) use a phone line to make data calls. To
complete these types of calls, you must dial * 9 9 prior to the
destination phone number. A successful data transfer mainly
depends on the speed and quality of your Internet connection.
To learn more, visit: www.ooma.com/fax

Connecting your phone jacks

You can link the Ooma Telo to all the phone
jacks in your home, allowing you to connect
phones in multiple rooms.

Note: The PHONE port on the back of your Ooma Telo
is not designed or certified for connecting to your phone
company’s wiring, whether through the phone jacks in
your home or otherwise. In order to avoid an increased risk of fire and/or electrical shock, you must first completely
and physically disconnect the telephone company’s wiring outside of your house from the phone wiring that is inside of
your house, before you plug your Ooma Telo into your phone jacks. Please visit www.ooma.com/homedistribution

not operational. It is normal for the logo to blink red
for a couple of minutes during boot up. Otherwise,
check the following to make sure everything is set
up correctly:

  • Verify that you have activated your device as
described in Step 1. If you plugged in your device
before going through the activation process, try
    rebooting it now.
  • Check that your network cables are plugged
in securely. Verify that the INTERNET port is
connected to your router (or modem). The LED at
the bottom right of the connector will be lit green if
    the cable is connected properly.
  • Check that your Internet connection is working.
Try connecting a computer to the HOME port and
browse to my.ooma.com. You should see the
login screen for My Ooma. If not, troubleshoot your
    Internet connection.
  • Try rebooting your Telo, modem, and router by
pulling out the power and plugging them back in.
    logo does not light up
Check that the AC adapter is plugged in and power
is being supplied to the device.
  • You don’t hear the Ooma dialtone
If the Ooma logo is blue but you don’t hear a dialtone,
check that your phone is correctly plugged into the
    PHONE port.
  • Incoming calls do not ring your home phone
When Do Not Disturb is turned on, the Ooma logo
will light up purple and all incoming calls will go
directly to voicemail without ringing your phones. To
turn off the feature, press and hold the >> button or
    dial * 7 9 from your phone.
  • You are unable to hear your messages
Check that the speaker hasn’t been turned off.
Increase the volume level by pressing . The
device will say what volume it has been set to.
  • Voice constantly breaks up
Voice quality is dependent on the speed and quality
    of your Internet connection.
For best results, Ooma recommends that you
hardwire your Telo between the modem and
router as shown in Alternative Setup Option
    A. This configuration allows phone calls to be
intelligently prioritized over other network traffic.

Quick Start Guide

Installing Ooma is easy!
Congratulations on purchasing Ooma. Installation is easy and will take only about 15 minutes. Follow the steps in this guide to set up your Base Station and your Ooma account. Next, you will plug in the 4G Adapter to act as either a primary or a backup Internet connection for your Base Station.

  Get the Ooma Setup app

The easiest way to set up your Base Station is with your iPhone or Android smartphone. Visit the app store on your phone and search for the Ooma Setup app. Open the app when it is installed.  The app will ask you to enter some information about yourself and your location. You will also pick a service plan (don’t worry – you can change this later) and enter your billing information.
To download the app faster, scan the QR code below with your smartphone camera.

https://www.ooma.com/ooma-setup-app

If you don’t have a smartphone or cannot install the app, please contact one of our support specialists for assistance. Our support team is available at 1-888-711-6662 Monday through Friday from 5am to 5pm PST, or Saturday through Sunday from 8am to 5pm PST.

Connect 4G Adapter to Base Station

  OPTIONAL: Plug in Ethernet Cable

If you wish to use the Ooma Connect 4G adapter as a backup Internet connection, use the included Ethernet cable to connect your Base Station to your Home Internet. Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the port on the back of the Base Station. Connect the other end of the cable to an open port on your router.

Power on the Base Station

Connect a Phone

Make sure your Base Station is plugged in and that it has powered on and downloaded any applicable updates. Then, using an existing corded or cordless phone, plug the other end of the cord into the PHONE port.

Troubleshooting

      • logo is blinking red
  • For 4G LTE only installations: Try moving the base Station and 4G adapter to a different location in your home. See Placement Advisory on page 4. Use the mobile setup app to view the signal strength. Test different locations for optimum performance.
  • Try rebooting your Base Station, modem, and router  by pulling out the power and plugging them back in.
  • logo does not light up
Check that the AC adapter is plugged in and power is being supplied to the device.
  • You don’t hear the Ooma dialtone If the Ooma logo is blue but you don’t hear a dialtone, check that your phone is correctly plugged into the PHONE port.
  • Incoming calls do not ring your home phone
When Do Not Disturb is turned on, the Ooma logo will  light up purple and all incoming calls will go directly to voicemail without ringing your phones. To turn off the feature, press and hold the button or dial from your phone.
  • You are unable to hear your messages
Check that the speaker hasn’t been turned off. Increase the volume level by pressing . The device will say what volume it has been set to.
  • Voice constantly breaks up
Voice quality is dependent on the speed and quality of your Internet connection. For 4G LTE Only Installations:  Try moving the Base Station and 4G adapter to a different location in your home. See Placement Advisory on page 4.  Use the mobile setup app to view the signal strength. Test different locations for optimum performance.

Getting Started
You’re just a few quick steps from making and receiving calls on your new Ooma HD2 Handset. This handset is the perfect companion to the Ooma Telo™—you’ll be able to access all Ooma features and even unlock new functionality! Before you begin, please make sure that your Ooma Telo is installed and operating properly, as your new handset cannot be set up without a functioning Telo.

Remove the battery cover located on the back of the handset by sliding it away from the center of the device. Insert the two rechargeable AA batteries, making sure that you align the flat end against the springs. Replace the battery cover by sliding it in the opposite direction.

WARNING:
If you need to replace the batteries included with your handset, use only rechargeable Nickel Metal-Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. Other types of batteries may damage the handset or create a risk of fire.

Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet and then connect the AC adapter cable to the charging cradle. Put the handset on the cradle.

When the handset is on its cradle, it willshow a lightning bolt in the battery icon when it is charging.

We recommend that you leave the handset on the cradle for 30 minutes before proceeding to the next step. The handset requires 10 hours to fully charge.

Press the Page key on your Ooma Telo and hold it down for three seconds to activate registration mode. When the handset detects the Telo, press the YES soft key to proceed.

Once the handset is successfully registered, the home screen will be displayed.
Each Ooma Telo supports up to four Ooma HD2 Handsets.

IMPORTANT: The Ooma HD2 Handset is not compatible with the first-generation Ooma Telo Handset. If you wish to switch from using the original Ooma Telo Handset to the new Ooma HD2 Handset, you must first dial on a phone connected to your Ooma Telo. The Telo will reboot and download a new version of the software. The upgrade will take about 5 minutes to complete.
Once the Telo is back in service, repeat Step 3. The Telo will now connect to your HD2 Handsets. Any older Telo Handsets will no longer work.

After the handset is registered to your Telo, it will display a home screen similar to the one pictured below.

Ooma Office Base Station

Quick Installation Guide
Introduction
Setting up your Ooma Office Base Station is quick and easy.

Your Base Station includes one phone jack for connecting an analog phone/fax machine. The Base Station also includes a wireless radio that can link with up to four Ooma DP1 desk phones or Linx devices (for connecting additional analog phone/fax machines). If you wish to use more than four DP1 or Linx devices, you will need additional Base Stations.

Package Contents

Step 1 Get Started

Otherwise, you will need to add your Base Station to your Ooma Office account.

Step 2 Connect your Base Station to the Internet

Use your Ethernet cable to connect the TO INTERNET port of the
Base Station to an open Ethernet port of your router or switch.

Step 3 Power Up Your Base Station

Plug the provided AC adapter into the POWER port. It is normal for the status light on the front of the Base Station to blink amber for several minutes while the device is booting up. The status light will turn solid blue once the system is fully functional.

NOTE: Ooma is constantly working to improve Ooma Office and we frequently upgrade the Office software. If your device requires a software upgrade it may take 10-30 minutes to boot up the first time you plug it in. This is normal. Do not unplug the Base Station while it is upgrading. It will automatically reboot after the upgrade is complete.

Step 4 Connect Phones or Fax Machines

You may connect an analog phone or fax directly to your Base Station via the PHONE port.
If you’d like to connect DP1 or Linx devices, please follow the instructions included with those devices.

Once completed, you are ready to start calling!

Alternative Setup Option

For optimal voice quality, your Base Station should be installed between your modem and router.

Troubleshooting
Base Station status indicator is blinking amber

A blinking amber status indicator means your Base Station is not operational. Below are a few troubleshooting steps to take:

  • Your Base Station may not be connected to the Internet. Check that your network cables are plugged in securely. Verify that the TO INTERNET port is connect to your modem, router, or switch and that the green LED at the top of the port is illuminated.
  • Try rebooting your Base Station, modem, router, and or switch by power cycling the devices.
  • Verify that you can access the Internet via the network port to which the Base Station is connected. To test this, you can connect a computer to the LOCAL NETWORK port of the Base Station and navigate to http://office.ooma.com. You should see the login screen for Ooma Office Manager. If not, troubleshoot your network connection.
  • Your Base Station may be unable to register with the Ooma network. Verify that you have activated your device by logging in to the Ooma Office Manager portal: http://office.ooma.com
The phone connected to the Base Station has no dial tone

If the system status indicator on the Base Station is blue, but you don’t hear a dial tone, check your phone or fax machine is correctly plugged into the PHONE port on the Base Station.

I hear an “extension has not been set up” error message when I pick up the handset

Log into Ooma Office Manager, navigate to the Devices section to confirm the Base Station phone port has been assigned to a user. If it has not been, assign the Base Station to the desired user.

NOTE: If your Base Station is not listed as an available device, please contact Ooma Office Support at 866-939-6662 (US), or 877-948-6662 (Canada).
