6. Some Useful Information

How the Forehead Thermometer MC-720 Works
This unit measures the temperature at the surface of the forehead by sensing infrared emission of the skin at the measured point, and then calculates the oral-equivalent value using a unique algorithm based on actual body temperature survey data.

About Body Temperature
Body temperature refers to the stable temperature of the inner body (also known as core body temperature). While temperature measurements at the armpit or mouth provides surface temperature values, holding the thermometer steadily at the measurement point for approx. 10 minutes provides a temperature measurement more closely representing that of core body temperature.

Since forehead temperature measurement involves no bodily support of the thermometer, the resulting measured temperature is typically lower than that of the armpit or mouth.

However, since the forehead has blood vessels that are much less prone to vascular constriction (a natural function of body temperature adjustment), it is supposedly a better measurement area for determining core body temperature, even in a lower
temperature environment. By contrast, temperature measured at the arm or leg, for example, is not a suitable gauge of core body temperature, since such body areas are more subject to vascular constriction. (Note that temperature measured at the forehead may still be influenced by other conditions, such as sweating, or wind from
an air conditioner, etc. It is therefore advised to perform measurement in as stable an environment as possible.)

When measuring the temperature of an infant, note that infant body temperature is generally higher than adult body temperature and easily affected by external factors. For example, body temperature tends to increase after nursing or crying. Therefore, it is recommended to take measurements with the infant in calm and normal condition.

Temperature differences between body temperature and forehead temperature

This unit measures the temperature at the surface of the forehead by sensing infrared emission of the skin at the measured point, and then calculates the oral-equivalent value using a unique algorithm (forehead measurement mode) based on actual body temperature survey data.

Knowing One’s Normal Temperature In order to make a correct judgment of suspected fever conditions, it is important to know one’s normal temperature.
Normal temperature varies with the individual and also changes depending on the time through a day. In addition, measured body temperatures may vary depending on the thermometer or the body part where you measure (see the graph “Variances in core body temperatures obtained at the forehead and mouth”). To find out one’s normal temperature, therefore, we recommend performing regular measurements under the following conditions:

  • Measure with the same thermometer.
  • Measure at the same area.
  • Measure at the same time of day.

FAQ 1
Why are my blood pressure readings sometimes different?
Your blood pressure changes constantly based on your daily activities and time of day. Because of this, some fluctuations can be expected. That’s why it is important to use averages over time to compare readings. Because each person is different, it is important to consult with your physician about what your numbers mean to you.
FAQ 2
Why could my physician’s reading be different than my readings taken at home?
Having your blood pressure measured by a healthcare professional in a physician’s office can cause nervousness and may result in an elevated reading. Because these readings can vary considerably, you should take your blood pressure on a regular basis at home and share your results with your healthcare provider.

TIP 1
For accurate readings:
– Avoid bathing, drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking, exercising, and eating for 30 minutes before taking a measurement.
– Rest for at least 5 minutes before taking a measurement.
– Sit quietly with your legs uncrossed and your feet flat on the floor.

1.1 Display symbols
Irregular Heartbeat Symbol (

When the monitor detects an irregular rhythm two or more times during the measurement, the irregular heartbeat symbol will appear on the display with the measurement values. An irregular heartbeat rhythm is defined as a rhythm that is 25% less or 25% more than the average rhythm detected while the monitor is measuring the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. If the irregular heartbeat symbol displays with your measurement results, we recommend you consult your physician. Follow the directions of your physician.

Movement Error Symbol (

The movement error symbol is displayed if you move your body during the measurement. Please remove the arm cuff, and wait 2 – 3 minutes. Take another measurement, remain still during measurement.

Classification of BP (Blood Pressure)

ACC/AHA 2017 Hypertension guidelines define categories of BP in adults as below: Categories of BP in Adults*

  • Individuals with Systolic BP and Diastolic BP in 2 categories should be designated to the higher BP category.

BP indicates blood pressure (based on an average of ≥ 2 careful readings obtained on ≥ 2 occasions). Source: ACC/AHA 2017 High Blood Pressure Clinical Practice Guideline Warning: NEVER diagnose or treat yourself based on your readings. ALWAYS consult with your physician.

1.2 Blood Pressure Measurement Tips

To help ensure an accurate reading, follow these directions:

  • Stress raises blood pressure. Avoid taking measurements during stressful times.
  • Measurements should be taken in a quiet place.
  • It is important to take measurements at the same times each day. Taking measurements in the morning and in the evening is recommended.
  • Remember to have a record of your blood pressure and pulse readings for your physician. A single measurement does not provide an accurate indication of your true blood pressure. You need to take and record several readings over a period of time.

Caution:

  • Avoid bathing, drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking, exercising and eating for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement.
  • Rest for at least 5 minutes before taking a measurement.

2. Preparation

2.1 Battery Installation
  1. Remove the battery cover.
  2. Insert 4 “AA” batteries as indicated in the battery compartment.
  3. Replace the battery cover.

Notes:

  • When the low battery symbol ( ) appears on the display, turn the monitor off, then replace all batteries at the same time. Long life alkaline batteries are recommended.
  • The measurement values continue to be stored in memory even after the batteries are replaced.
  • Disposal of used batteries should be carried out in accordance with local regulations.

3. Using the Monitor

3.1 Applying the Arm Cuff

Caution: Remove tight-fitting, thick clothing from your arm while taking a measurement.

  1. Insert the air plug into the air jack securely.
  2. Wrap the arm cuff firmly in place around your left upper arm. The bottom edge of the arm cuff should be 0.5 inch (1 to 2 cm) above the elbow. Air tube is on the inside of your arm and aligned with your middle finger.
  3. Secure closed with the fabric fastener.

Notes:

  • When you take a measurement on the right arm, the air tube will be at the side of your elbow. Be careful not to rest your arm on the air tube.
  • The blood pressure can differ between the right arm and the left arm, and the measured blood pressure values can be different. OMRON recommends to always use the same arm for measurement. If the values between both arms differ substantially, please check with your physician which arm to use for your measurements.
3.2 How to Sit Correctly

To take a measurement, you need to be relaxed and comfortably seated, under comfortable room temperature. Avoid bathing, drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking, exercising or eating 30 minutes before taking a measurement.

  • Sit in a chair with your legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor.
  • Sit with your back and arm supported.
  • The arm cuff should be placed on your arm at the same level as your heart, with the arm resting comfortably on a table.
3.3 Taking a Measurement

Notes:

  • To stop the measurement, press the START/STOP button once to deflate the arm cuff.
  • Remain still and quiet while taking a measurement.
  1. Press the START/STOP button. The arm cuff will start to inflate automatically
  2. Remove the arm cuff.
  3. Press the START/STOP button to turn the monitor off. The monitor automatically stores the measurement result in its memory. It will automatically turn off after 2 minutes. Note: Wait 2-3 minutes before taking another measurement. Waiting between measurements allows the arteries to return to the condition prior to taking a measurement.
3.4 Using the Memory Function

The monitor automatically stores the results up to 14 sets. Note: If the memory is full, the monitor will delete the oldest value.  To View the Measurement Values Stored in Memory

  1. Press the button. The Memory number appears for a second before the pulse rate is displayed. The newest set is numbered “1”.
  2. Press the button repeatedly to view the values stored in memory.
To Delete All the Values Stored in Memory

FAQ

Why are my blood pressure readings sometimes different?
Your blood pressure changes constantly based on your daily activities and time of day. Because of this, some fluctuations can be expected. That’s why it is important to use averages over time to compare readings. Because each person is different, it is important to consult with your physician about what your numbers mean to you.

TIP

For accurate readings:

  • Avoid bathing, drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking, exercising and eating for 30 minutes before taking a measurement.
  • Rest for at least 5 minutes before taking a measurement.
  • Sit quietly with your legs uncrossed and your feet flat on the floor.

Make sure that your blood pressure monitor and smart device are successfully paired, and the app is open on your smart device, before transferring your readings to the app.

BEFORE TAKING A MEASUREMENT

To ensure a reliable reading follow these recommendations:

  1. Avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, exercising, and bathing for 30 minutes prior to taking a measurement. Rest for at least 15 minutes prior to taking the measurement.
  2.  Stress raises blood pressure. Avoid taking measurements during stressful times.
  3.  Measurements should be taken in a quiet place.
  4.  Remove tight-fitting clothing from your arm.
  5.  Sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm on
  6.  table so that the cuff is at the same level as your heart.
  7.  Remain still and do not talk during the measurement.
  8.  Wait 2-3 minutes between measurements. The wait time allows the arteries to return to the condition prior to taking the blood pressure measurement. You may need to increase the wait time depending on your individual physiological characteristics.
  9. Keep a record of your blood pressure and pulse readings for your physician. A single measurement may not provide an accurate indication of your true blood pressure. You need to take and record several readings over a period of time. Try to measure your blood pressure at about the same time each day for consistency.

Yes it did. Please note: it did not come with an ac adapter.

Can this be used on the lower arm?

BP CUFFS are only made to be used on upper arm. Results will not be accurate if used on lower arm.

Does this model alert me when the cuff is not on correctly?

It will set an Error if it thinks the cuff is too loose and not pressuring properly and getting a reasonable reading …or if you move around while taking a reading. But otherwise, no. If you line it up on your arm as it instructs .. the exact tightness is not critical. It will compensate for small variances . Should be snug..but not pinching tight or sloppy loose.

Is the cuff 16cm (6 in) wide?

5.75 inches

How do I know if the BP760 is ready to take my blood pressure?

When the warm-up period is complete, the display will show an animated heart symbol and a message that reads “WAIT.” The heart symbol indicates that you should wait until the monitor is ready to take your blood pressure. This may take up to 2 minutes depending on your body position.

How do I know if my blood pressure reading is accurate?

The BP760 has been validated against a mercury sphygmomanometer (standard blood pressure measurement device). In addition, Omron’s clinical studies have shown that readings taken with the IntelliSense® technology are comparable to readings taken with a manual cuff. However, variations in individual readings may occur due to environmental conditions or individual differences.

What should I do if my readings are consistently higher than what my doctor says they should be?

Your doctor may want you to check your blood pressure at home more often. He or she may also want you to use a different monitor or cuff size. If none of these actions resolve your problem, contact your doctor for further advice.

How often should I check my blood pressure?

Check your blood pressure once daily in the morning before getting out of bed and after you have been sitting for at least 5 minutes. Record this reading in a notebook or on a calendar chart so that you can see if there is any pattern to your readings (e.g., higher readings in the morning than at night). Your doctor may recommend checking more often and/or using other devices such as an automatic blood pressure cuff, 24-hour ambulatory monitor or home blood pressure machine. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. If you have diabetes, consult with your doctor about how often you need to check your blood pressure and whether any special equipment is needed for monitoring purposes. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure, consult with your doctor about how often you need to check your blood pressure and whether any special equipment is needed for monitoring purposes. For more information about home monitoring, ask your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations or contact Omron Healthcare Inc., Dept. 888-746-5626 (USA), www.omronhealthcareusa.com .

  1. Press the button, while the memory symbol appears.
  2. While holding the button down, press the START/STOP button for more than 3 seconds. Note: You cannot partially delete the values stored in memory.
