FAQ’S

What is the difference between a 4K and 1080p security camera?

The main difference is resolution. 4K cameras have a higher resolution than 1080p cameras. For example, a 1080p camera has 1920 x 1080 pixels, while a 4K camera has 3840 x 2160 pixels.

What is the difference between H.264 and H.265?

H.264 is an older compression standard that is still supported by most devices. H.265, also known as HEVC, is newer and more efficient than H.264, so it can deliver video of the same quality at lower bitrates, making it easier to store and transmit video over networks with limited bandwidth.

Can I use any DVR with Lorex cameras?

All Viewtron IP cameras are ONVIF compliant which allows them to work with any ONVIF compliant recorder (DVR / NVR).

Can Lorex security cameras be hacked?

Any device connected to the internet can be hacked, and Lorex security cameras are no different. However, Lorex security cameras are relatively secure because all of the footage is stored locally on a hard drive instead of in cloud storage where hackers can access them.

Do Lorex cameras work without Internet?

Your Lorex Smart Home Security Center (LSHSC) does not need to be connected to Wi-Fi to function. This would be especially useful in the following scenarios: You don’t have an internet connection on your property but you still want to stay updated and record events.

What is difference between NVR and DVR?

A DVR converts analog footage into a digital format, while an NVR typically only works with digital footage. DVR systems process data at the recorder, while NVR systems encode and process data at the camera before transmitting it to the recorder for storage and remote viewing.

Does the orange dot mean someone is listening?

An orange indicator means the microphone is being used by an app on your iPhone. The orange dot wouldn’t indicate that since it is supposed to be on while you are on a call.

What happens when Lorex SD card is full?

when the SD card is full, and files will need to be manually deleted before new recordings can be stored.

How long do Lorex cameras keep footage?

The estimated recording time with a HDD of 2TB for 16 camera is around 1-2 days and 2-4 days for 8 cameras when using continuous recording. The unit can be set to record only when motion is detected however which greatly expands the recording time depending on the amount of motion events detected.

How do I view my Lorex recordings?

To view playback recordings using the Lorex Secure / FLIR Secure app:
Launch the Lorex Secure / FLIR Secure app on your smartphone or tablet.
On the Home screen, tap your camera to stream live video.
Tap the History icon to display all recorded events.
Scroll up / down to browse through all events.

Can you hear sound on Lorex cameras?

Select camera models include a built-in microphone that will capture the sounds around the camera. This can be a very handy feature that can add additional evidence (such as voices) and a greater ability to detect and interpret events, even if they occur off-screen.

How long does Lorex battery last?

These long-lasting, rechargeable lithium ion batteries can now power the cameras up to 8 months on a single charge.

Appendix B: Frequently Asked Questions

 Wired vs. Wireless Cameras

A wired camera has a video cable that transmits the video signal from the camera to a recording or viewing device.
A wireless camera does not use a video cable. Instead, it wirelessly transmits the video signal to a wireless receiver that is connected to your DVR. Wireless cameras do not require video cabling to be run between the camera and the DVR, which reduces installation time and cost.

Does a wireless camera require power?

Yes. Wireless cameras require two power sources: one connected to the camera, and the other to the receiver. The term “wireless” refers to the lack of a video cable between the camera and the receiver.

How far can a wireless camera transmit a video signal?

In an open field (with line of sight), a typical wireless camera has a range between 250 – 500 feet. ‘Line-of-sight’ means that there are no obstructions between the camera and receiver. Obstructions include walls, buildings, trees, and certain electronic devices. Materials containing moisture (for example, leaves) may also act as an obstruction. Cubical walls, drywall, glass, and windows generally do not degrade wireless signal strength.
In a closed environment—such as the interior of a house—the wireless camera range is between 100 – 165 feet. The signal range varies depending on the type of building materials or objects the wireless signal must pass through. The signal range also depends on whether there are competing signals using the same frequency as the camera. For example, signals from cordless phones or routers may affect signal strength. Adaptive Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology featured in the latest Lorex models greatly reduce signal interference.

Range Limiting Factors1
Signal Reduction Through Materials

Signal strength decreases as it passes through different types of material. The table below shows how signals become reduced when passing through different materials:

Material Signal Reduction (%)
Plaster & Wood 10 – 30%
Brick 30 – 50%
Concrete Cinder Blocks 50 – 70%
Metal & Metal Cladding 70 – 90%

NOTE:  Signals that must pass through wet or moist material (e.g. shrubs and trees) may be significantly reduced.
The stronger the signal strength, the higher the video frame rate. The lower the signal strength, the lower the video frame rate.

Are digital wireless camera signals secure?

Yes. Lorex digital wireless products feature a wireless transmission method called Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS). This type of signal is highly resistant to eavesdropping as it generates a channel hopping sequence using an algorithm generated by the receiver, which only the camera can follow through the “pairing” function.
Pairing is an electronic handshake between digital wireless devices. Digital wireless cameras can only be paired to one receiver. This is to prevent interception by third parties, and prevents any other device from picking up the signal—this also means that you cannot pair one camera to multiple receivers.

How many frames per second should I expect from a digital wireless camera?

Current Lorex digital wireless cameras offer 10 – 30 FPS (Frames Per Second) performance. Actual frame rate depends mainly on signal strength (see the chart in section above).
For details on supported resolutions and frame rates for this model, see “Appendix A: System Specifications” on page 10.

How many wireless cameras can I install?

It is recommended to install a maximum of 4 wireless cameras per system (4 receivers and 4 cameras). Minimum space between receivers should be 4 inches / 10cm and minimum space between cameras should be 6.5ft / 2m to minimize potential signal strength degradation.

Appendix C: Troubleshooting

If you have problems with your system, there is often a quick and simple solution. Please try the following:

Problem Solution
There is no picture from the camera(s) •  Make sure that the camera is plugged into a power outlet and that the power adapter is plugged in properly.

•  Make sure receiver is plugged into a power outlet.

•  Move the camera closer to the receiver.

•  Make sure BNC video output cable is connected to your DVR or television.

•  If you are viewing your camera(s) using a TV, make sure you have the correct input selected.

There is no audio from the camera(s) •  Make sure the RCA audio output cable is connected to your DVR or television audio input.

•  Make sure audio recording is enabled on your DVR. See your DVR manual for further instruction.

•  Make sure to remove the protective film from the camera lens. The microphone is located on the front of the camera and will not work properly if the protective film is left on.

The picture is dropping •  Move the camera closer to the receiver.

•  Try repositioning the camera, receiver, or both to improve the reception.

The picture is or has become choppy •  The picture may become choppy when experiencing a lower frame rate (e.g. 6 frames per second vs. a higher 20 frames per second).

•  Try moving the camera closer to the receiver.

•  Remove obstructions between the receiver and camera.

The picture is white •  “Washout” or “white wash” can occur when a strong light source is pointed at the camera lens. The camera lens is not harmed during a white wash.

•  Do not point your camera towards a bright light source.

The picture is too dark •  If using during the day, the camera may not be getting enough light. Reconsider the position of your camera.
The picture is too bright •  If using during the day, the camera may be getting too much light. Reconsider the position of your camera.
Night vision is not working •  Night vision activates when light levels drop. The area may have too much light.
Bright spot in video when viewing camera at night •  Night vision reflects when pointing a camera at a window. Move the camera to a different location.

Appendix D: Extending Wireless Signal Range

DISCLAIMER: Certain accessories are not available in all markets. There are several ways to boost your wireless signal as well as options to help you extend the range of the wireless signal.
Clear Line-of-Sight:  You should always try to ensure there is a clear line-of-sight between the camera and the receiver.

Extending Your Wireless Signal

Even with a clear line-of-sight between your camera(s) and your receiver(s), you may experience a lower video frame rate simply due to the distance between your wireless devices.
Accessory antennas are available that can help extend the range of your wireless signal.

GHZ Directional Wireless Panel Antenna

Use the 2.4GHz Directional Wireless Panel Antenna
(model #: ACCANTD9) to focus a wireless signal onto the camera in order to increase the range of transmission
(clear line-of-sight between the camera and the antenna is required). A 20ft extension cable is included to help to properly position the antenna.

Scenario 1: Single Receiver Installation

Attach a directional antenna to the camera and/or the receiver. It is recommended to attach the antenna to the receiver and place it in a location that has clear line-of-sight to the camera. Ensure that the directional antenna is pointing toward the other antenna. For example, if the directional antenna is connected to your receiver, the directional antenna should point at the camera (see figure above). During the installation, check the reception on your DVR.

Scenario 2: Multiple Camera / Receiver Installation

If you are using multiple wireless cameras and receivers in your installation, attach directional antennas to the camera(s) and receiver(s) that are farthest away from each other. Follow these guidelines to increase the signal strength between your cameras and receivers:

  • Point directional antennas towards the receiver for each camera.
  • Keep as much space as possible between each receiver.
  • Keep as much space as possible between directional antennas if using more than one.
  • Minimize the amount of obstructions (e.g. walls or trees) between the antennas and receivers.
  • During the installation, check the reception of each camera on your DVR.

Visit www.lorextechnology.com for more details on wireless antennas and accessories.

STEP 1: Important Installation Guidelines

Optimizing Person and Vehicle Detection Accuracy:

  • Angle the camera so that objects of interest appear in the bottom ⅔ of the camera image.
  • Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 50ft (~15m) from the camera.

Lower accuracy for objects further away than 50ft (~15m) and/ or in the top ⅓ of the image.

Optimal accuracy for objects within 50ft (~15m) and in the bottom ⅔ of the image.

  • Angle the camera between 30~60° down from thelevel position.
  • Install the camera between 8-16ft (2.5-5m) off of the ground.

    STEP 2: Installing the Camera
NOTE: Accuracy of person and vehicle detection will be influenced by multiple factors, such as the object’s distance from the camera, the size of the object, and
the height and angle of the camera. Night vision will also impact the accuracy of detection.

Additional Installation Tips:

  • Point the camera where there is the least amount of obstructions (e.g., tree branches).
  • Install the camera where vandals cannot easily reach.
  • Secure cabling so that it is not exposed or easily cut.
  • This camera is rated for outdoor use. Installation in a sheltered location is recommended.

STEP 2: Installing the Camera

ATTENTION:

  • Test your camera prior to selecting a permanent mounting location by temporarily connecting the camera and cable to your NVR.
  • Review the section “STEP 1: Important Installation Guidelines” above before choosing a permanent mounting location.

Before Installing the Camera

  • Decide whether to run the cables through the wall / ceiling (drilling required) or along the wall / ceiling.
  • If you run the cables along the wall / ceiling, you must run the cable through the cable notch on the base. This will keep the camera base flush to the surface when mounted.

To install your camera:

  1. Use the included mounting template to mark holes for the screws. Drill holes for the mounting screws.
NOTE: Insert the included drywall anchors if you are installing the camera in drywall.
  2.  Connect cables as shown in the section “Connecting the Camera”.
  3. Feed the cable through the mounting surface or cable notch and mount the camera stand to the surface using the provided screws.
  4. Use a Philips head screwdriver (not included) to loosen the adjustment screws shown below. Adjust the camera position as needed:

    A. Rotate the camera base 360°.
    B. Tilt the camera on the stand up to 90°.
    C. Twist the camera around the stand 360°.
  5. Tighten the adjustment screws to secure the position.
  6. Remove the vinyl film from the camera lens when your installation is complete.

Connecting the Camera

Using the RJ45 Cable Gland (Optional)

The pre-attached RJ45 cable gland covers the camera’s Ethernet connector and the RJ45 plug to provide weather-resistance and protection from dust, dirt and other
environmental contaminants.

NOTE: The RJ45 cable gland is weather-resistant. Seal the cap with silicone and/or electrical tape for additional sealing if it will be exposed to precipitation regularly.

STEP 2: Important Installation Notes

Ensuring Accurate Person & Vehicle Detection:

Please refer to the following installation notes for outdoor mounting locations:

  • Angle the camera so that objects of interest appear in the bottom ⅔ of the camera image.
  • Choose a location where objects of interest will be between 5-50ft (1.5-15m) from the camera.
  • Lower accuracy for objects further away than 50ft (~15m) and/or in the top ⅓ of the image.
  • Optimal accuracy for objects between 5-50ft (1.5- 15m) and in the bottom ⅔ of the image.
  • Angle the camera between 30~60° down from the level position.
  • Install the camera between 8-16ft (2.5-5m) off of the ground.

NOTE: Accuracy of person and vehicle detection will be influenced by multiple factors, such as the object’s distance from the camera, the size of the object, and the height and angle of the camera. Night vision will also impact the accuracy of detection.

Connectivity Guidelines:

  • Place the camera as close to your Wi-Fi router or access point as possible.
  • Reduce the number of obstructive materials between the camera and the router or access point. Concrete, brick, metal and wood are the most common materials in your house that can cause poor signal strength.
  • Other electronic devices such as microwaves, TVs, cordless phones, and baby monitors can cause signal interference. It is recommended to install the camera as far away from these devices as possible.

Once you have completed initial setup using the Lorex Home app detailed on the front page, and reviewed all installation notices above, select one of the installation methods below:

STEP 3A: Wall Mounting

Please refer to the following installation notes for outdoor mounting locations:

  • Ensure objects of interest will be further than 5ft (1.5m) from the camera.
  • Place the camera so that it has a clear view of the scene, and is not blocked by the surface it is installed on.

For ceiling installation:
Refer to “Ensuring Accurate Person & Vehicle Detection” above.

  1. Unplug the camera.
  2. Use the included mounting template to mark holes for the mounting screws (×4) and cable (see Figure 8).
  3. Drill holes where marked. If required, insert the included drywall anchors (×4).
  4. Remove the pre-inserted silicon plugs (4×) from the mounting stand (see Figure 9).
  5. Twist the camera clockwise onto the mounting stand (see Figure 10)
  6. Set the mounting stand over the screw holes. Secure the mounting stand in place using the included screws (see Figure 11).
  7. Feed the camera cable through the hole in the mounting stand base, as well as the mounting surface (see Figure 12).
