Activate your Google Fi service

You must activate and use Google Fi in the United States (territories not included). After that, you can use Fi service internationally. We grant exceptions to military and State Department employees who serve abroad.

Before you get started

New to Fi?

  • If you’re new to Fi, sign up at fi.google.com/signup.
  • You can order a free SIM card during the sign-up process or purchase one at an authorized retailer.
  • If you purchased a SIM card at a retail location, select Bring your own phone during the sign-up process. After you confirm that your phone is compatible with Fi, in the “We’ll send a free SIM” section, select Don’t need a new SIM.

Transferring your number?

Most transfers take less than 15 minutes, but some can take up to 24 hours. Learn how to transfer your number.

Plug in your phone

To make sure your phone doesn’t lose power during setup, keep it plugged in until you’re done with setup.
It’s also a good idea to fully charge the battery as soon as you get a chance.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network

For the best setup experience, you’ll want access to a Wi-Fi network.

Set up your iPhone

Insert your SIM card

Open the SIM tray on your iPhone and insert your SIM card.

View a tutorial on how to activate your Fi service on iPhone.

Download the Google Fi app

Go to the App store or fi.google.com/app and download the Google Fi app. We recommend that you complete activation within the United States. To complete your setup, follow the app instructions and restart your phone.

If you have more than one Google account on the phone, the Fi account must be the Admin or owner account.

About your TV Box (GFHD254)
If you subscribe to Google Fiber TV service, you received one TV Box (GFHD254), a power cable, and a remote control for each TV included in the service.About your TV Box

This article describes the TV Box model GFHD254. If you have another model, see specific information for your device: model GFD200 or model GFD100. The TV Box dimensions are 8.4″ W x 6.0″ D x 1.2″ H. The following image shows the purpose of each port on the back of the device.

TV Box model GFHD254

The AV out port provides analog video connections using a special breakout cable. Your Installation Specialist can provide this cable, if needed. Each TV Box is connected by WiFi or Ethernet to the Network+ Box. The TV Box is also connected to your TV.

Connecting your TV to the HDMI port on the TV Box ensures the most vivid picture and enhances your viewing enjoyment. If your TV does not support HDMI, you can use an analog breakout cable, which is available from your Installation Specialist or at a Google Fiber Space in your area. (You can use an HDMI or an analog connection, but not both.) Do not connect your TV Box output to a VCR. Video signals fed through VCRs may be affected by copyright protection systems and may produce a distorted image on your TV.

Connecting your TV to the HDMI

When the TV Box is properly connected and powered on, the LED on the front displays solid blue.

TV Box is properly connected

Although the connector on the back of the TV Box looks just like a headphone jack, it is an AV out port. To use the AV out port, you can use a special analog breakout cable, which is available from your Installation Specialist, or you can pick one up at a Google Fiber Space in your area. The USB port on the back of the TV Box is not currently supported but might be enabled to support new features in a future release.

I can’t send or receive text messages (SMS/MMS)

If you can’t send or receive text messages (SMS/MMS), have problems with group messages, or can’t send or receive pictures and video, try the steps here. After each step, check to find out if your issue is fixed.

If you just transferred your number to Google Fi, there might be a 48-hour delay before you can send or receive text messages. Before you try these steps, learn more about number transfers.

If you use an iPhone, make sure you update your text settings. If you have a newer model and experience this issue, try to activate with an eSIM.

On Messages by Google

Check for Messages by Google updates

On Hangouts

Hangouts no longer works for texts. If your default messaging app is Hangouts, switch to Messages by Google for a similar experience.

For more info, go to:

On non-Google apps

For help, contact your app’s provider.

If you use Android and use any app other than Messages by Google to send and receive messages, download the most recent version of Messages. For the best results, make Messages your default messaging app.

For MMS, the file size can’t exceed 8 MB. For international messages, the limit is 1 MB.

In general, we recommend that you keep all of your phone’s apps up to date. Here’s how you can update your Google Fi app:

  1. On your phone, open the Play Store app .
  2. In the top right, tap your account icon Manage apps & device.
  3. Under “Updates available,” tap See details and find Google Fi , if available.
  4. On the right, tap Update.

CHECK FOR FI APP UPDATES

To check whether there’s a problem with the number you want to text:

  • Send a test message to a group of friends or family and ask them if it went through.
  • For MMS, make sure the number you text is tied to a device that can receive group or multimedia messages.
  • If you want to text a short code number, try to text the word “HELP.” If you get a message that says “Service access denied,” contact a Google Fi agent for more help.

Make sure the number you try to text is correct. If you have issues with texts, use the full 10- or 11-digit number. Try:

  • (area code) (number)
  • 1 (area code) (number)

Text an international number from the US

  • Canada and US Virgin Islands: Use 1 (area code) (local number).
  • To all other countries and regions: Touch and hold 0 until + appears on the display. Use (country code) (area code) (local number). For example, to text a number in the UK, use + 44 (area code) (local number).

Text a US or international number from outside the US

Learn how to turn on international services on an Android device.

Turn on international services through fi.google.com:

  1. Sign in to your Fi account.
  2. Under “Account,” tap your name.
  3. Find “International Features.”
  4. Turn on Service outside the US and Calls to non-US numbers.

Based on what kind of number you want to text:

  • To text a number in the same country or region: Use (area code) (local number).
  • To text another country or region: Touch and hold 0 until + appears on the display. Use (country code) (area code) (local number). For example, to message a number in the UK from Japan, dial + 44 (area code) (local number).
    • If this number format doesn’t work, you can also try the exit code of the country or region you’re visiting. Use (exit code) (destination country code) (area code) (local number).
  • To text a number in the US: Use 1 (area code) (local number).

If your contact uses an iPhone, ask them to make sure the messages are sent as SMS/MMS.

Check the coverage map for US locations. If you use your phone outside the US, check the 170+ supported countries and regions where you can use Google Fi.

If we have coverage in your location: Try to go to another spot nearby where you have a signal. If you’re inside a building or underground, try to go outside. Buildings can sometimes block signals. If that doesn’t work, continue on to the next steps.

If we don’t have coverage in your location: Connect to Wi-Fi so you can try to send messages over Wi-Fi. Learn how to connect to Wi-Fi.

If you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, make sure that mobile data is turned on.

Block a phone number

You can block numbers from calling and messaging you through Google Fi.

How number blocking works

When you block a number, you won’t receive any calls or messages (SMS or MMS) from that number. This applies to your Fi device and all your forwarding phones.

When someone with a blocked number tries to send you a message, it will look to the sender like the message is sent as usual. If someone with a blocked number tries to call you, the call won’t go through and there won’t be an option to leave you a voicemail. The caller will just hear a message saying that they’ve reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service.

Please note: Google Fi cannot control whether other services (like other apps on your phone) are blocking calls or messages. There may also be some limited cases when Google Fi cannot block calls or messages, such as when you’re roaming internationally.

  1. Open the Google Fi app or website.
  2. In the Account tab, go to “Phone settings.”
  3. Select Blocked numbers.
  4. Select Block a number.

  6. Select Block.

Block with Google Voice and other services

Google Voice

If you switched from Google Voice, any numbers that you’ve blocked in Google Voice carry over to Google Fi.

Call blocking and emergency services (911)

If you make an emergency call, Google Fi will turn off all number blocking for a 2-hour period to make sure that 911 operators can call you back if needed.

To turn off number blocking temporarily, Google Fi sends a data message, and in some cases a text message, to our servers to let us know an emergency call was made from your device.
